Restaurante Rustico
Tucked away near the Alameda down the street from El Corte Inglés, this small jewel of a
tapas bar brings a fresh and er, rustic perspective to many of the traditional dishes of Spanish Cuisine. Decked out pueblo-style — featuring wood-beam celings, stone walls, and cozy nooks and crannies — it is quite easy to forget you are in the midst of a bustling metropolis. They serve a huge range of freshly prepared tapas with many original recipes that you won’t find anywhere else. I had the lomo con salsa roquefort (roast pork with roquefort cheese) followed by queso de cabra gratinado con miel (goat cheese with honey sauce and nuts. And yes, I like my cheese thank you) and both were strong and flavourful. Prices are quite reasonable as well, with my two rather substantial tapas and a beer came in at under €10. Daily newspapers are on hand too if you fancy perusing your morning away. If you haven’t bothered to stray from the more touristy locales of Santa Cruz and the Cathedral for your tapas, get thee to Rustica! C/Javier Lasso de la Vega 14 tel: 954 379 568
Corral Del Rey
This season introduces a new addition to Seville’s
growing luxury hotel market: Corral del Rey opened its doors this October to offer an exquisite restaurant, bar and 6 bedroomed hotel (complete with a rooftop plunge-pool for the summer). Owned by the entrepreneurial Reid brothers (from Hacienda de San Rafael hotel in Jerez), Corral del Rey is fast becoming the chicest spot for dining in central Seville. A stone’s throw from Plaza Alfalfa, clientele can enjoy sophisticated cuisine at relaxed prices such as pumpkin ravioli with date and almond puree, confit of suckling pig with honey and vermouth sauce and caramelized banana with passion fruit and maple syrup. A must visit. C/Corral del Re,y 12 tel: 954 500 708
Avenida 5
Located directly behind the Plaza de Armas bus station, the Avenida 5 theatre shows films in versión original. American, British and other foreign films are played with the original voices and subtitled in Spanish, making it the ideal destination for foreigners who prefer their movies
un-dubbed (or maybe it doesn’t unnerve you that Harrison Ford speaks like a tequila swigging, flea bitten mechanic from the mexican outback and happens to have the same voice as Hugh Grant). Avenida shows some Spanish films as well, but always has at least a few English-language flicks in its lineup. And Avenida is not just unique in practice, but in ambience as well. It’s an old theatre — smaller but also more charming than its larger shopping mall-situated competitors. Ticket and concession prices are comparable to other Sevilla theatres and show times are easily found online on or in the paper. C/ Marqués de Parada, 15 tel:15 954 293 025
LINGUISTS’ CORNER
Choice phrase: “¡Pónganse los pantalones de una vez, hombre!”
Literal translation: Put your trousers on for once, man!
Explanation: Used by enraged spouses, feminists, and fitness instructors alike, this select phrase means, “don’t be a coward”; the Spanish equivalent of “Pull your socks up, mate”. When you need your man to confront that spider in the bathroom, or you need to inspire some more macho tendencies in his behaviour, this is the phrase to use.
